COMMERCE, Calif. — Numerous last-minute lineup changes took their toll on BAMMA USA’s “BadBeat 4” card Friday night at the Commerce Casino. Headliner Gabe Ruediger saw two opponents, Brandon Anderson and Musa Toliver, scratched from the main event, the latter on the day of the show, leaving the promotion little choice but to scrap Ruegider’s bout altogether. A women’s bout between model-slash-fighter Rachel Cummins and Jackie Vandenburgh was also canceled.

The co-feature clash of undefeated bantamweights Chris Beal and Jimmy Jones found itself as the impromptu main event, and the two turned in the fight of the night, albeit one mired in controversy. The first round saw Xtreme Couture product Jones poking away at Beal with a variety of bothersome, if not particularly devastating, kicks. Beal attempted to counter with punch flurries which largely found nothing but air, and a single takedown paid little dividends as Beal found no way past Jones’ guard.

he second round saw Jones and Beal in multiple ground scrambles, during one of which Jones worked from his back to lock up a tight triangle choke attempt, as well as a kimura which Beal later admitted popped his shoulder. Beal gutted out every situation but found himself almost constantly on the defensive. Read More

Gabe Ruediger was supposed to fight in the main event of BAMMA USA’s Badbeat 4, but his opponent Musa Toliver pulled out hours before the fight stating that he injured his rib sparring.

Still, the show was extremely entertaining, as some of Southern California’s best prospects showed their skills in the cage at Commerce Casino.

Chris Beal stayed undefeated, winning by split decision over Xtreme Couture fighter Jimmy Jones. Jones threatened with submissions in the second and third after winning the first with solid kickboxing. Beal was able to score takedowns and fight off the submissions of his lanky opponent, causing the judges to lean his way with the decision.

Mike Jasper gained valuable ring time in his fight against Miguel Cosio, as he started slowly but soon showed why he is one of the scariest prospects around. In the third round, he caused some serious reverberation with his punches landing on Cosio and the canvas. Jasper has finished his fights quickly, so he was happy to get the ring time that cannot be mimicked in training. Read More

Former UFC Fighter Will Make His Lightweight Debut at Badbeat 5 Against Cris ‘The Lightning’ Leyva in main event on March 16

Following four fights under the brightest lights on the biggest stage of the sport, Mike “The Joker” Guymon found himself calling it quits and retiring at the age of 37. Now, he’s back with more focus than ever before and will be dropping down in weight to fight Cris “The Lightning” Leyva in a main event lightweight tussle at Badbeat 5 on March 16.

Guymon’s back and forth journey to attain a lifelong goal of fighting for the UFC® ended once he made the announcement he would no longer compete in mixed martial arts. A year has passed since he made that decision. He says that he is more dangerous now than he ever was before and he’s ready to drop to the lightweight division and destroy those in his path.

“People are really going to be scared of me at one fifty-five,” said Guymon during an interview with BAMMA USA. “I’m tearing people apart in the gym. My new medication is good; I shouldn’t have taken those last two fights in the UFC because I wasn’t right but now I am.”

Prior to stepping into the Octagon for his last appearance, Guymon suffered a minor setback that nearly resulted in hospitalization. According to Joker, he wasn’t dealing well with the medication he was on. It wasn’t allowing him to compete at his highest level possible and it wasn’t helping him deal with life outside of being a professional athlete.

The doctors wanted to change his medication up but it was too close to his upcoming bout with Yoshida and therefore they decided to increase the dosage instead.

Alternatively, the effects showed inside the cage and Guymon didn’t perform the way he is capable of. That has all changed. With the constant effort to better his style of life, Guymon has altered his medication and is now in the best shape, both physically and mentally, that he has ever been.
